Dr. Chabala formerly served as the President and Chief Scientific Officer of Pharmacopeia, Inc. (NASDAQ-GM: PCOP), a leading provider of products and services designed to improve and accelerate the drug discovery and optimization processes. There he was responsible for all research activities, technical aspects of contract negotiations, managing scientific collaborations, and government regulatory compliance. Prior to Pharmacopeia, Dr. Chabala served as Vice President, Discovery Chemistry for Bristol-Myers Squibb Company. At Bristol-Myers Squibb he was responsible for all medicinal chemistry research worldwide in twenty-five programs in cardiovascular diseases, oncology, immunology and inflammation, metabolic diseases, anti-infective agents, and central nervous system diseases.
Before Bristol-Myers Squibb, Dr. Chabala spent over fifteen years at Merck & Company, most recently as Executive Director, Basic Chemistry. At Merck, he was responsible for three departments of medicinal chemistry and basic chemistry services which included approximately one half of all ongoing corporate research in animal health, antibiotics, immunology, cardiovascular agents, anti-inflammatories, and vaccines. Additionally, he managed all natural product isolation and structure determination, as well as protein X-ray and NMR.
Dr. Chabala currently serves on the scientific advisory boards of, and as an independent consultant to, early stage drug discovery companies and non-profit organizations, advising from the pre-clinical research and development stage through the clinical process.
Dr. Chabala is a member of the American Chemical Society, the American Association for the Advancement of Science, the International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry, and Sigma Xi. He has published over 40 articles and holds 26 patents.
Dr. Chabala received his B.S. in chemistry from Bucknell University and his Ph.D. in organic chemistry from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
